Thanksgiving Hangover

10177Many of us overindulged yesterday. In fact most Americans just ate too much, drank too much, ate too much dessert, continued eating way after we were full and then laid around watching football (or whatever) until we got to the point where we could attack the leftovers and eat some more!

Its a good thing that Thanksgiving comes around only one time per year. It is the traditional start of the “feasting” season (although it could be argued that is starts at Halloween with candy and all). But I read somewhere this morning that 51% of our annual weight gain comes at the holidays and most people tend to gain an average of 7 lbs. during the holidays (and this is all of us who don’t want anything called an “annual weight GAIN!”)

Its just the family meals with all the trimmings, the cakes, the pies, the cookies, the candy, the eggnog, the spirits, the “just a little taste of this” and the “just a little taste of that” and the stress and the shopping and the parties and the planning and the “no time to exercise”, “I’ll make a New Years Resolution” after its over that gets us.

But as anyone who has ever tried knows very well. It is harder to take off excess weight than it is too put it on- unless you are one of those few souls that struggles to put on weight or if you are anorexic, which is a whole different article so we won’t go there.

So think about it this holiday season. Do you want to be lean and healthy or do you want a chocolate truffle? I know what you want in the moment but what do you want for life? A chocolate truffle, as wonderful as they taste, only lasts a moment and then they are gone but being overweight sticks for way too long, even when you are trying to lose, or especially when you are trying to lose!

So, give yourself a gift this holiday season. Vow to not gain any weight. Do what you have to do to keep your Vow. And get yourself a better, brighter, happier New Years resolution rather than the same ol, same ol, resolution to lose weight!
