In March 2009 a new strain of the type A influenza virus known as H1N1 or swine flu began spreading. Though the widespread occurrence of this virus is noteworthy, now is not the time to panicOne should know what it is all about before making imortant decision and therefore should know the facts available. The virus was confirmed officially on the 24th of April 2009 after which, in the following days, cases were found of the virus in areas such as Mexico, the United States, the UK, and Israel to mention a few.
The outbreak of a total of more than 4,000 candidate cases, prompted the World Health Organization, is a dedicated agency of the United Nations (UN) that acts as a managing authority on international public health issues, to increase its pandemic alert phase to “Phase 5,” which is defined as “…human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region.”However, even though there was this kind of alert for the virus, the WHO says that up till now there is no real reason to panic since in the majority of the cases, the infrected people made a full recovery from their illness.
In the beginning of May, there was quite a source for panic, since officials from both the WHO and the CDC said that this influence had the potential to become a pandemic. This means that its spread could infect people in a large community, content or the entire world. Because of the fact that it transmits from person to person, it was said that alertness had to be at an all time high.
This disease is different from other illness because unlike cases such as chicken pox, human will never be able to become completely immune to the swine flu since it constnatly changing and producing new version of itself as the time passes. The only thing that people should do at the moment is take all the usual hygiene procedure and follow them to the letter – wash hands, cover mouth when sneezing, etc – and visit their doctor if they feel that are getting the flu. The only thing that they should not do is panic.
Time magazine recently reported that researchers at Northwestern University “estimated that even if nothing were done to slow the spread of the disease from now on, by the end of May the U.S. would have only about 1,700 cases.” Furthermore, the good news is the H1N1 flu virus is hitting North America at the end of flu season; it may very well phase itself out and re-appear in the fall, but that gives health officials months to prepare.
