Even though many people dream of being able to just pop a pill and have excess weight just fall off, it just doesn’t happen. New research has concluded that diet pills work much better when they are used in conjunction with the hard work of dieting and exercise.
A recent study that was backed by the National Institutes of Health has demonstrated that adopting healthy habits in addition to taking weight loss drugs can increase the effectiveness of the drug by almost twice as much. In the one year study, patients taking the weight-loss drug Meridia were divided into 4 groups. One group took the diet pills alone, the 2nd group did counseling that promoted a 1500 calorie a day diet and a half-hour walk on most days, the third group took the drug with only brief counseling at the beginning, and the fourth group underwent only group counseling.
The typical weight loss for the group who took the pills alone was 11 lbs. The groups that included just the counseling was a bit higher but the group that had counseling coupled with the lifestyle changes had lost 27 lbs. more than twice as much as the pills alone group.
So even with diet pills you still should diet and exercise. There is no free lunch when it comes down to weight loss.
