The basic function of rehab is to iron out the patient or to reinitialize them and reformat their daily lives without the original addiction. Even after one goes through rehab, it is wise they continue on with support groups that constantly reinforce their sobriety.

Alcoholics who wish to overcome their addiction learn that a support network is a fundamental aspect in their continued recovery. All across the U.S. there are AA meetings and 12 step programs that offer individuals with addiction, help and support in safe and confidential group meetings that give them a chance to share experiences they have had and to learn from others who share. These meetings allow someone with a heavy drinking problem to constantly witness the problems associated with drinking and to instill a mental pattern that labels drinking as not being the answer!
