Heart Healthy Communities

by Kar on November 7, 2005

10145Never before in the history of mankind has it been so easy to be unhealthy. We have literally engineered natural healthy living out of our lives. We don’t even have to get off our couches to change the channel. We travel everywhere by car and fast food is abundant and everywhere. For many of us, exercise no longer happens naturally, we have to make it happen.
In a study published last year by the Rand Corporation, an interesting correlation emerged. The study scored 38 metropolitan areas on the “sprawl index”, (which is basically a measure of their dependence on cars) when the researchers looked at disease rates for the same areas they found that communities that were more walkable had the lowest rates of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke and the rates rose steadily as the areas became more spread out and less walkable. Without even trying, people in areas with sidewalks, walkways, and bike paths seemed to be exercising enough to ward off disease. To read more about it see msnbc.msn.com
