A diet high in vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains can help prevent both chronic diseases and being overweight. The American Institute for Cancer Research has an award-winning brochure that helps to remind people. ” The New American Plate” incorporates the concepts of proportion and portion size. The brochure recommends that people gradually make a transition to a plate that contains 2/3 (or more) vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans and 1/3 (or less) meat and dairy products. This is a healthy proportion of plant foods to protein and fat. Proper proportions and increasing physical activity is a healthy first step in controlling your weight and preventing chronic disease. The second step is to gradually reduce portion size.
