Every year between October and May many people come down with the dreaded “Flu”. There isn’t much that is more miserable. The best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get vaccinated sometime in October or November. There are two types of vaccines for the flu, the “flu shot” which is an inactivated vaccine that is given with a needle, usually in the arm, and the “nasal spray” flu vaccine, which is a nasal spray made from live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu.
The flu vaccines change every year based upon international surveillance and expert and scientists estimations about the types and strains of flu that will circulate in the given year.
People at high risk for complications from the flu are
-People 65 years and older
-People living in long-term care facilities and nursing homes
-People age 2-64 years of age with any type of chronic illness-
-Children age 6 months to 23 months
-pregnant women
-health care professionals who provide direct patient care
-household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months old
