10122A University of Kansas obesity researcher, named Joe Donnelly, has completed a 26 week study that showed that participants in a phone-based program lost just as much weight as another group that received support through a face-to-face clinical method.
For 12 weeks both groups followed the same 1200 calorie diet. The one group of dieters attended weekly group meetings and the other group used conference calls. Both groups lost comparable amounts of weight.
The phone can give many advantages, as overhead for the facilitator can be lower and time and expense for the participant is lowered. Also either party can be located anywhere in the world.
Mr. Donnelly plans to lecture on his findings at two meetings of the National American Association for the Study of Obesity.
