Three Kinds of Depression

When one thinks of depression, they may just consider that sense of the “blues” one gets when they are feeling a little down after a tough day. That loose interpretation of depression, however, is far from accurate.

In reality, depression can take multiple forms.

First, there is situational depression. This arises from a specific trauma or event and usually lasts a relatively short period of time. Although feelings may be intense, they are usually manageable and don’t interfere with daily life.

Then, there is Dysthymia. Dysthymia is a low-grade chronic depression. Remember that neighbor who always seemed unhappy or that relative who had a perpetual case of the blues? They may have been Dysthymic. Those with this version of depression can function but are constantly having the quality of their lives undermined–often without even knowing it!

Finally, there is clinical depression. Those who are so down that they don’t gather much enjoyment out of life or who find themselves unable to function normally because of their emotional state may be suffering from clinical depression.

Depression is a growing epidemic affecting millions of people every year. If you are able to escape depression, the odds are that someone you know won’t be so lucky. Now is a great time to learn more about the disease, its treatment and some strategies to enhance your own well-being.
