Spinach is Back..Or is it?

I read on the Internet that spinach is back on the shelves at your local grocers. But, I’ve looked. So far no spinach in my neighborhood. No spinach, no spring mix, just packages of lettuce with little signs saying “sans spinach”.

It’s unfortunate that the e-coli outbreak happened. Our food suppliers need to be more than diligent in making sure we have safe food. How many people will never buy spinach again because of this outbreak?

Spinach is an extremely nutritious food, lots of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants. We have to eat. And our good health often depends on eating healthfully. Don’t be afraid of spinach. It’s very good for you.

But like I said before our food suppliers must do whatever it takes to make our food supply safe. Any form of produce could be at risk for e-coli if it is not handled properly and improper use of manure for fertilizer is used. I heard once of an e-coli outbreak from strawberries. Meat is often the main culprit when it comes to e-coli and it is important to cook your meat and especially hamburger well to destroy any toxins if they exist.

E-coli can be deadly and very serious. If you ever wondered about what it is and how it works, read “Toxin” by Robin Cook. It’s pretty horrifying. The book “Toxin” may make you think twice about eating meat and adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. But as the spinach outbreak has proven, vegetatians are at just as much risk.

Our food supply must be safe. All of our lives depend upon it!
