Eating in Season

I bought some apples at the store yesterday. They looked pretty. Shiny red (I suppose that could have been that wax stuff), but still big, pretty, red apples with no blemishes. They looked good!

But after cutting them open I could see that there were brown spots inside, bruises, and the flesh was mushy.
I was disappointed. The exterior of the apples hid the inside problems.

But when I think about it, August is not apple season. The apples from this year (at least in my part of the world) are not even ripe yet. We still have a month or more before the apples are really ripe and good. So the apples I purchased yesterday had to have been from last year, last years apples.

The great thing about fresh foods is that they don’t last forever! Cold storage or shipping or whatever, fresh foods spoil. Junky stuff that we shouldn’t eat doesn’t spoil. You know if bacteria won’t eat it, we shouldn’t either. It couldn’t possible be good for you.

The other day I heard someone say that if you put a can of shortening in the garage, even without a lid, it will stay the same for years. Yuck, think what that does inside your body!

But back to the apples, you know nature knows best. There are other fruits and vegetables in season now that are probably healthier than the apples. But come the end of September the apples will be the thing to eat!
