Health food can be strictly fruits and vegetables without meat in a diet, the absence of any complex carbohydrates from a diet to eliminating all sugars from a diet. Health food isn’t really all that complicated to define in reality. Health food is simply any natural or prepared food popularly believed to promote good health.

Health food is specifically intended to provide the best nutrition and support the health of anyone who consumes it without introducing any harmful or potentially toxic substances into the human body. Whole foods are often considered to be health food as the are not highly processed and essential nutrients and fiber have not been removed. Natural foods are also considered to be health foods because the have come directly from nature and are free from all artificial ingredients. Organic foods are the latest fad in health food and are closely related to natural foods except for the fact that organic foods are grown without the introduction of any chemicals or soil enhancements.

While there is really no strict definition for health food, some people find it hard to find the best or purest health foods like natural, organic or whole foods at their local grocer. Some health food guidelines that can be followed for the best health food available to most people are to look for foods that are not highly processed with few chemical additives, preservatives or coloring, foods that do not have white flour or sure and foods that contain a good amount of organic ingredients. Locally grown farm produce can be considered health foods and will only require a good washing before consumption.

Health foods commonly contain less hydrogenated fats and are wheat free, milk free, salt free, additive free, lactose free and sugar free. Foods that provide a particular action for a specific part of the body is known as a functional food and is also considered to be a health food. For the most traditional requirements regarding health food, the food pyramid and other such guidelines are still considered to provide the human body with a balanced and healthy diet.
