You may have read or heard on the news this week that some researchers have developed what they are calling “healthy pork” by cloning. They mixed the DNA from the roundworm C. elegans and the DNA from pigs to produce pork with significant amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, the healthy kind that is believed to prevent heart disease. Researchers are also hoping to improve the technique in pigs and learn to do the same with chickens and cows.
You know, the problem I have is the “mad scientist” factor. Omega-3 does not occur naturally in pork like it does in wild salmon. Man-made, processed anything is never as healthy as what nature provides and I am not so sure that genetically-modified food is good for our bodies. I know that genetically modified soybeans and other foods are commonplace, but I still don’t agree that they are completely good for you like nature intended.
And I’ll have to go with the vegans on this one. The thought of eating a genetically-modified pig just grosses me out, even if it does mean healthy bacon.
