With the recent confirmed case of Mad Cow disease in Alabama again the debate over eating meat or not comes to mind.

I don’t know the answer to this debate. The Vegans have the answer. Don’t eat meat, dairy, eggs or even honey, nothing from an animal. The hard-core meat-eaters and the beef, pork and dairy industries have the answer. Beef provides iron, vitamin B-12 and Zinc. Lean beef can be a healthy part of our diets. Milk provides calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus, drink up!

But unfortunately for me, neither side has convinced me. Of course if Mad Cow disease became prevalent and people started dying from the bird flu, the vegans may convince me. But for years I have read about the dangers of Mad Cow disease but there have only been 3 recorded cases in the U. S. since December 2003 and none before that. However, Japan has had 23 cases.

Still, that is not many and it leads me to think that perhaps much of the rhetoric has been panic over something that may or may not happen–but it hasn’t happened yet!

Like I said, I don’t know the answer to the Vegan-Meat-eater debate. But I do know from years of living that what works for one may not be the best answer for another. We’re all different and not everyone will respond to one diet the same way. One diet does not fit all!
