The Biggest Loser
Again, I am amazed! I watched “The Biggest Loser” last night, the one with the 2 families, the two hour special. Those people lost an amazing amount of weight in a very short time. They were supposed to have been at the “ranch” for 2 weeks. At the end of the 2 weeks they had lost 15 lbs or more. The one man lost 25 lbs. The one daughter lost 15 lbs and she said “Who does that? Loses 15 lbs in 2 weeks?”. That is my question exactly-Who does that?
In order to lose 1 pound there has to be a calorie deficit of 3500 calories (that is real science-look it up!) So in order to lose 25 lbs in two weeks there would have to be a calorie deficit created by eating less calories and burning more calories of 43,750 calories per week. That is 6250 calories per day. Wow! How much are these people working out? How much are they eating? Very few people, even obese people, consume anywhere near 6250 calories per day and how much do you have to exercise to burn that many calories?? How does this work? Can we bottle it and give the formula to everyday people?
I think that “The Biggest Loser” is inspiring. I really do. But I am skeptical. It just doesn’t make sense. And I doubt that real everyday people could duplicate those results. The people on the show look great, they made great progress, but I think for you and me (and other mere mortals), it just takes longer!
